Commandant Abdulhamid Salisu Kabara, newly deployed State Commandant of the NSCDC Niger State Command.
The newly deployed State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State, Commandant Abdulhamid Salisu Kabara, has expressed deep concern over the recent deaths of persons arrested in connection with suspected illegal mining activities in the state.
Kabara spoke after formally assuming duty as the new State Commandant on September 18, 2026, taking over the leadership of the Niger State Command from Commandant Suberu Siyaka Aniviye.
The development comes at a particularly sensitive time for the Command, with the deaths of some persons arrested over suspected illegal mining activities placing renewed attention on the responsibilities of security agencies in enforcing the law while ensuring the safety and dignity of persons in their custody.
In a message conveyed by the Command’s Civil Defence Public Relations Officer, DSC Abubakar M.R. Muti, Kabara expressed his heartfelt sympathy to the families of the deceased and all those affected by the incident.
The new Commandant reaffirmed the NSCDC’s commitment to its statutory responsibilities, including arrest, investigation, enforcement and the fight against illegal mining.
He, however, stressed that the discharge of those responsibilities must not overshadow the fundamental importance of human life.
“Beyond arrests, investigations, enforcement and the fight against illegal mining, we must remember one fundamental truth: every human life matters,” Kabara said.
According to him, the loss of any human life is painful, adding that his thoughts and prayers were with the families mourning their loved ones at the difficult period.
Kabara further emphasised that the responsibility of protecting society and enforcing the law must go hand in hand with the responsibility to uphold the dignity, safety and welfare of persons in custody.
His remarks came as he assumed leadership of the Niger State Command, where he is expected to oversee the Corps’ security and civil defence operations, including activities relating to the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure and enforcement against activities within its statutory mandate.
On the deaths of the arrested persons, Kabara expressed sympathy rather than pre-empting any determination on the circumstances surrounding the incident, while reaffirming the need for security operations to be conducted with due regard for human dignity.
He prayed that Almighty Allah forgive the shortcomings of the deceased and grant them eternal rest.
The Commandant also prayed for strength, patience and fortitude for the families, relatives and loved ones of the deceased as they come to terms with their loss.
The development was contained in a September 19, 2026 statement issued by the NSCDC Niger State Command through its Public Relations Unit.
